Merlot
Merlot is one of Australia’s most important red grape varieties with a production total of over 90,000 tonnes, behind only Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. Over the last ten years there has been a dramatic increase of Merlot plantings. Merlot is a versatile variety, in blends as well as on its own.
Merlot is certainly most famous in its homeland of France. The region of Bordeaux has used the variety to make some of the world’s greatest and most expensive wines.
In Australia only the regions with the coldest vineyards don’t grow Merlot grapes. It is commonly seen in all other wine regions throughout the country.
Merlot’s one universal characteristic is it’s fleshy, supple mid palate. This alone is why it is so popular for blending with other varieties. Traditionally it has been blended with Cabernet Sauvignon, where it enhances the structure and balance of the wine. As a straight varietal, Australian Merlot tends to lack outstanding front and back palates. However, it partners with food exceptionally well. From Pasta dishes to Vegetables and Roasted Meats. Blended Cabernet Merlot is a better choice to accompany cheeses.
