Mudgee Wine Region

MUDGEE WINE REGION

Location.

The Great Dividing Range borders the Mudgee district on three sides, this is the reason behind the Aboriginal name’s meaning, “nest in the hills”. The area’s elevation ranges between 470m to 1080m. The Mudgee Wine Region is only 260 km from Sydney. The drive takes you through the Blue Mountains and into the countryside, a great relaxing start to a weekend away.

History.

The first white settlers arrived in Mudgee in the early 1820’s. By the late 1860’s commercial plantings of grape vines were well established, due to the expertise of German immigrants.

The modern era of grape and wine production began in the 1960’s and 1970’s.

The Region.

The Mudgee Wine Region is prosperous in both natural beauty and fine wine. Vineyards and Lucerne crops thrive in the rich soil of the Mudgee Region.

Powerful and concentrated, Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the regional highlights with its complex flavours and ageing capabilities. Chardonnay is the dominating white variety in the area, with pronounced peach and fig flavours.

Mudgee Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon have earned the region a name for full bodied wines, in both red and white varieties.

Mudgee’s climate is mild with cool summer nights, which extend the ripening period, with rain in both spring and summer. Grapes in Mudgee are harvested late February to early April.

Wine region Classification.

Essential to the organisation and progress of the Australian wine industry is the geographic division of the country into wine zones, regions and sub-regions. The system referred to as Geographic Indications (GI) governs the wine making process and the marketing of wine to both the domestic and international markets.

The system is in place because the land, its soil, aspect and topography as well as the climate are necessary in determining the character of wine.

Wine carrying a regional name must have 85% of the fruit sourced from that region.

Tourism.

Mudgee is a popular tourist destination due to the many cellar doors, great local produce and plenty of quality restaurants and cafés. The Mudgee Wine Region is known throughout Australia and in many parts of the world.
