About Mudgee Wines

The Viticultural history of Mudgee stretches back to 1858. Rothview was the first of the Mudgee Wineries and produced Mudgee’s first Chardonnay. Today the winery still exists but has had many name and ownership changes over the years.

Like many other pioneering Grape Growing regions in Australia, most of the early production specialised in Fortified Wines, but over countless years it became apparent that the conditions in Mudgee were better suited to dry table wines, such as Shiraz and Chardonnay.

Mudgee’s Wine region history can be distinctly divided into two phases, the first in the middle of the 19th century and the second in the 1960’s.

Regional Wine

The weather in Mudgee is too warm for the best results from most white varieties, however the climate is more continental than the Hunter Valley and Mudgee is best known for the flavours of reds. Cabernet Sauvignon among the best.

Mudgee Wineries grow many grape varieties, along with the traditional French Grapes, there are also Spanish and Italian Varietals.

Mudgee Wineries are known across and Australia and around the world. Exporting Mudgee wine is becoming more and more frequent. Mystic Park Wines can only be found at the Mystic Park Wines Cellar Door in Mudgee, so it is worth the journey to enjoy a bottle of wine from one of Mudgee’s newest wineries.

Wineries

Today there are over forty Mudgee Wineries. Mystic Park Wines is one of the newest wineries in the region to open in 2008. With vines on the property up to 20 years old and new vines amongst them, Mystic Park Wines grow all their own produce and are best known for their distinct and flavoursome reds. A picturesque valley setting is where you’ll find Mystic Park Wines, along the same road where the famous poet Henry Lawson lived. As there are many Mudgee Wineries, a unique approach is refreshing and Mystic Park Wines offers this with a distinguishable barn style building on spacious green lawns with views of Lucerne flats and of course vineyards.

Mudgee Wineries are easy to get around, with many tour options and local maps pin pointing their locations. Unlike the Hunter Valley, Mudgee Wineries are relatively close together and many can be visited and enjoyed in a day or weekend.

Wine Festival

Mudgee’s September Wine Festival is a well known event and popular with wine drinkers all over Australia. Only 260 km from Sydney, Mudgee Wineries are highly accessible and visitors to the town can enjoy the local talents, which include winemaking, cheese and honey production, art and music.
